Maine, The Pine Tree State employs over 38,000 in trucking industry according to the US Department of Commerce.

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) which is a member of the American Trucking Associations (ATA) has reported the following information on how the trucking industry relates to Maine’s economy:

Trucking Drives the Economy

Employment: Maine's trucking industry employed 31,140 jobs or one out of 15 in the state in 2011. In the year 2011, the trucking industry paid the total wages which exceeded $1.3 billion compared to the average annual trucking industry salary of $40,317. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the United States reported that the truck drivers, the massive tractor-trailer and delivery drivers held with 12,400 jobs with $33,175 of mean annual salary in May 2011.

Small Business Emphasis: In Maine, there were almost 4,560 small and locally owned trucking companies located and are served widely by a range of both large and small supporting businesses.

Transportation of Essential Products: Maine's 90% of total manufactured tonnage or 133,469 tons per day was transported using trucks in 2010. Over Maine's, 84% of the communities depend exclusively on trucks to move their goods.

Trucking Pays the Freight

As an Industry: Maine's trucking industry paid $176 million approximately in federal and state roadway taxes and fees. The industry paid 37% of taxes owed by Maine motorists, despite 8% of miles traveled by the state's truckers.

Individual Companies: In January 2014, a regular five-axle tractor semitrailer combination paid $9,101 in state highway use taxes in addition to $8,906 in federal use taxes which are higher than the regular tax paid by Maine's businesses.

Roadway Use: In 2008, Maine had 22,828 miles of public roads over which motorists traveled 15 billion miles, and the truckers traveled for 1.2 billion miles.

HVUT Form 2290 is the Heavy Vehicle Highway Use Tax paid to the IRS on an annual basis for operating heavy vehicles which equals or exceeds the taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds on the public highways.
