If a carrier is a qualified IFTA licensee and do not wish to be a part in the IFTA program, the carrier must obtain a trip permits. The permit must be obtained from each IFTA member jurisdiction in which the vehicle traveled as per each member jurisdiction regulation.
To operate their qualified motor vehicles in more than one jurisdiction out of their home jurisdiction, the carriers must register for an IFTA license. A motor vehicle is considered as qualified under the following perspectives:
Qualified Motor Vehicle will not include recreational vehicles unless used for business purposes.
To obtain an IFTA license, you have to complete an IFTA application which is to be sent to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). Maine BMV will mail renewal applications to all active accounts. If you do not receive an application, you can call 207-624-9000 ext. 52137.
All IFTA licensees are required to file quarterly fuel tax reports. ExpressIFTA, the IFTA Reporting Software provides the best solution to generate IFTA report in the most secure way with no manual tax calculations.
Maine's trucking industry requires the carriers to have a decal set per qualified vehicle. Each decal costs $5 fee.
You will receive an IFTA license and a set of decals, valid for a year. Each qualified motor vehicle requires a license photocopy to be kept safe in the vehicle. The original license distributed by the bureau should be held at your business address.
