Is there an alternative to IFTA registration?

If a carrier is a qualified IFTA licensee and do not wish to be a part in the IFTA program, the carrier must obtain a trip permits. The permit must be obtained from each IFTA member jurisdiction in which the vehicle traveled as per each member jurisdiction regulation.

Should I register for an IFTA in my state?

To operate their qualified motor vehicles in more than one jurisdiction out of their home jurisdiction, the carriers must register for an IFTA license. A motor vehicle is considered as qualified under the following perspectives:

  • Traveled in at least two or more IFTA jurisdictions
  • Heavy vehicles with three or more axles or used in combination exceeding 26,000 pounds or 11,797 kilograms.

Qualified Motor Vehicle will not include recreational vehicles unless used for business purposes.

How do I apply for an IFTA license?

To obtain an IFTA license, you have to complete an IFTA application which is to be sent to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). Maine BMV will mail renewal applications to all active accounts. If you do not receive an application, you can call 207-624-9000 ext. 52137.

IFTA Quarterly Fuel Tax Report

Maine's trucking industry requires the carriers to have a decal set per qualified vehicle. Each decal costs $5 fee.

What credentials will I receive?

You will receive an IFTA license and a set of decals, valid for a year. Each qualified motor vehicle requires a license photocopy to be kept safe in the vehicle. The original license distributed by the bureau should be held at your business address.

Do I file a quarterly fuel tax report if I didn't run during the quarter?

You must submit a “zero report” even if no fuel was used to report the quarterly fuel tax return.

What is the penalty and interest rate for filing a late quarterly fuel tax report?

A penalty of $50 or 10% of tax due, whichever is greater, and 0.4167% of interest per month will be charged for failing to file a tax return, filing a late tax return, and underpaying taxes due on all delinquent tax dues at each jurisdiction .
